James Plotkin/Pimmon - Split #8 (12')

Year: 2000
Country: US
Label: FatCat Records
Catalog#: 12FAT024X
Genre: Electronic

Audio: flac (separate)
Size: 234 mb

Ltd to 1500 numbered copies.
This 12" is in the same series as the Matmos/Motion split, and is similar in many ways. These, too, are musicians adept at messing with sound so much that you get really confused as to what you're listening to. Yet they use different means and have different styles of doing so. James Plotkin is a guitarist, though from listening to this I'd assume he also uses many electronic devices. Not sound on his side of this 12" resembles a guitar to me, yet I read that his songs are based around guitars, so I'm guessing it's true. What it sounds like is waves of laser noises (or at least the sounds I've come to associate with lasers based on sci-fi movies and toy laser guns) with lots of blips, pings and other little prickly noises. It's an interesting, ever-shifting sound. Pimmon's music is based around his collection of recorded "love sounds," including heartbeats, kisses, etc. But of course, these sounds have been processed through so many machines and devices that they are unrecognizable. What's there is waves of synthesizers, mellow beats, and a mood of weird breathing noises, not to mention lots of electronic-sounding noises that I can't recognize as any particular instrument. This is music that keeps you on your toes, that's for sure. Both Plotkin and Pimmon's music shifts constantly from sound to sound, but both musicians are able to set up a comfortable, almost relaxing tone, which is a weird thing to have in the midst of such creative chaos. Like the Matmos/Motion split, this would make a great present for your jaded friends; there's nothing ordinary going on here. (www.fat-cat.co.uk, www.bubblecore.com)--Dave Heaton

This is double disc release Pigface has some of the more mellow and trippy tracks from Pigface on it like "Kiss King (high, high, high)", "Burundi" and "Nutopia", which are my favorite tracks from the disc. There are a lot of strange psychedelic droning noises in I think all of the songs.

Atmospheric Leeds, Yorkshire-based techno group who originally worked in a more funk-orientated vein for Blind Eye ("Throw A Crazy Shape", "Day-Glo Pussycat", "Heaven Ain't High Enough") and Concrete Productions ("Just Like Daddy's Gun") between 1988 and 1990. Afterwards the group: Brian Moss and Steve Dixon, split to travel around the globe. They reunited in 1991, along with female vocalist Goochie, and signed to York's Cybersound label, releasing "Can You Feel" and "Loud Everybody". Moss had formerly worked with Soft Cell on their debut album and was also a member of the heavily experimental Vicious Pink.

Godflesh - Love and hate in Dub

Year: 1997
Country: UK
Label: Earache
Catalog#: MOSH 178 LCD
Genre: Electronic
Style: Dub, Industrial, Experimental
Audio: flac
Size: 460 mb

Justin Broadrick's electronic and acoustic proclivities intersected once before, on the 1991 remix EP Slavestate. Where those mixes were wrought with an almost industrial-techno stiffness, Love and Hate In Dub (which sources Godflesh's 1996 trio release, Songs of Love and Hate) reflects Broadrick's more recent occupations: heavy ambient dub and nasty, paint-peeling drum'n'bass. The result is a more lithe, slithery redivision of Godflesh's metallic murk, some tracks echoing with deep, bassy drones, others pummeling away with odd rhythmic timbres and quasi-jungular patterns.

Country: UK
Label: KK Records
Catalog#: kk 152
Genre: Electronic
Style: Illbient, Dub
Audio: flac
Size: 294 mb

Not widely regarded as a standout in the SCORN catalog, Zander nevertheless marks another turn in styles for M J Harris. Now going solo with Scorn, Harris' work on Zander evokes the alien analogue soundscapes of Forbidden Planet that pulse and ping into the ether, while not abandoning the deep bass and beats that have become his trademark. The rhythms here are the sparsest of any Scorn release, with snares and kicks barely held together in patterns over the agonizingly slow tempos. There is less texture here from the beats than from the atmospheres created around them. Where previous Scorn tracks relied on a warm sampled-vinyl drum sound, the drums here sound as if they have been lifted from their source tapes, chopped down to the smallest useable fragments, and repositioned with a fractured sense of pointillism.

Luna w. Laeticia Sadier - Bonnie and Clyde e.p.

Year: 1995
Country: UK
Label: Beggars Banquet
Catalog#: BBQ 56CD
Genre: Rock
Style: Indie Rock
Audio: flac
Size: 141 mb

This Penthouse-era EP is comprised of one track from that album, "Chinatown," two markedly different recordings of Serge Gainsbourg's classic "Bonnie & Clyde," and a faithful cover of Talking Heads' "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel." While the "Clyde Barrow Version" of "Bonnie & Clyde" was included as a hidden track on the Penthouse LP, the "Bonnie Parker Version" of the song is exclusive to this EP. Much slower and deliberate than the straightforward "Barrow" recording, the "Parker" version is much more effective, allowing the duet between Dean Wareham and Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier room to breathe aside the lovely cello accompaniment without sounding forced. Although, just the chance to hear Wareham deliver his deadpan in French is worth the price of admission.

That's more like it! After that pointless debut, Fantomas come up with what will undoubtedly forever remain their best album. It's a bit of shame that it has to be other people's material, though.
The absolute highlights are tracks 1, 10, and 16. If hairs don't stand on your back during those, then you're probably deaf anyway and should consider vacuuming the insides of your empty head as a hobby. It's also interesting to compare Patton's version of "Charade" with the one played by Herb Albert. "The Omen" teaches those lame black metal bands how to create real energy with a blast-beat.
Other great tracks are 7, 11, 12, and 15. Further good stuff: everything else, apart from 9 and 14 which are not bad but flawed. "One Step Beyond" has drumming that should impress the most jaded listener of heavy music.
Whatever negative anyone may say about this album, they can't say it's dull.

Great stuff with Trevor Peres doing vocal duties not death style in a shouty hardcore way. But the music is a cross btween death metal/industrial except the last track which is a ambient instrumental totaly out of context with the rest of the album.

Refried Ectoplasm: Switched On, Vol. 2 collects 13 singles and rarities Stereolab released between 1992 and 1995, and it is far more than a mere oddities collection. More than any other album, Refried Ectoplasm charts Stereolab's astonishing musical growth between those three years, and offers several definitive songs — including "Lo Boob Oscillator," "French Disko," and "John Cage Bubblegum" — not available on any album. While such items are essential for collectors, the quality and accessibility of the music is very strong, showcasing Stereolab's complexity and providing an excellent introduction to the group.

John Zorn and Yamantaka Eye are definitely twins separated at birth. Their duo album Nani Nani is like one big happy family reunion, where the boys no one understands can finally run off into the sunset, cackling madly. Never before have two musicians been brought together to create such gleeful oddness; a few miracles result. Eye screams and it sounds trance-like and soothing. Zorn throws bits from surf music, film scores, and psychedelia like a kid who tosses candy into a basket, and it all comes out as a whole. The chaos of animals is heard in the background; still, everyone seems to get out alive. Yamantaka Eye is credited for playing the "toys" but in reality both musicians play them. Tracks like "Propolution," while sounding aggressive and harsh, betray an undercurrent of pure pleasure. This album is not for Sunday afternoon relaxation, but its obvious playfulness make its more discordant elements eminently tolerable, even amusing in their cleverness.

Catalog#: 000078
Genre: Electronic, Jazz, Rock
Style: Leftfield, Avantgarde, Experimental
Audio: flac
Size: 152 mb

Another smeared blossoming testament to the off-color and highly obtuse genius of John Zorn. A mostly minimalist and sparse landscape of sheer terror and spine-ripping controlled noise explosion. One of the highlights of the album is its wealth of renowned guest artists, most recognizably including Mike Patton and Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle fame (not to mention Patton's mile-long list of other brilliant projects). Patton's vocals mostly consist of heavy perverted breathing and what sounds like someone choking on their own fist, amidst a haunted house nursery/empty burying field landscape created from flute, viola, guitar, turntables, sound effects, and percussion. Listening to this alone will have you looking over your shoulder every few minutes to make sure someone is not crawling in through your walls with a dagger. Those already addicted to other Zorn's other works will find this indispensable, as will completist collectors of all things Mike Patton.

Moving in a much more minimal direction with stark beats and a pretty lo tech sound that can be quiet nice, Scorn continues to stay interesting. Pretty trippy stuff that my only complaint would be — it's to damn long! 75 minutes.

A polarising record that still stands as one of the godflesh's finest moments. bizarrely, while many tracks retain the cold, inhuman feel of previous recordings, Broadrick actually employs a human drummer to provide live drum tracks on this record. This is not as huge of a difference as you may imagine, considering the monolithic, brooding mechanical feel of standouts like "hunter". still, this furthers selfless' more conventional song structures, with Broadrick treading familiar verse/chorus/verse territories, once again making for huge grunt-along anthems that no longer strives for the bludgeoning, blatant approach of "streetcleaner" or the harshly oppressive feel of slavestate.

Totally different from the rest of the Naked City ouevre, though the eerie, quiet parts of Leng Tch'e provide a precedent. This album consists entirely of ambient, restrained, unsettling drones and spaciness. It's one of the most uncompromising such discs ever made, in my opinion. If you own it on CD, you get a fold-out booklet with around a dozen repeats of the cover art.

Year: 1986

Catalog#: BFFP 10 CD
Genre: Industrial
Style: Industrial Rock, Punk, Noise
Audio: flac
Size: 240 mb

Progenitors of Britain's extremist grindcore scene, Head of David (who hail from the industrial backwater of Dudley, near the Birmingham birthplace of Black Sabbath) may not have been the first band to blur the line between industrial music and grunge metal, but one need look no further than their calculated, incessant pounding to witness its near obliteration. The virulent sterility of Dogbreath suggests what Big Black might have sounded like had Steve Albini been obsessed by Black Sabbath's Paranoid: an overwrought guitar barrage and sinister, neanderthal machine rhythms (best put to use on a faithfully compulsive cover of Suicide's "Rocket USA").

Still a pretty entertaining release although pretty out of date sounding by today's standards. A real mixture of say Godflesh and a more straight early 90's industrial group.
